Our next project in Republic Labs has been asked for by members since the start. It’s been submitted to our Think Tank, voted up, and we’re ready to make it happen: Seamless cell to WiFi handover.
Right now, your Republic phone does what most other phones can’t. It uses the added power of WiFi – not just for Internet access – but for talk and text too. It’s built to be smarter right out of the box to help you stay better connected in more places than a traditional cell-only network. And, because our phones and app help unlock all that extra coverage via WiFi, it means you’re using fewer and fewer expensive cell towers, which means a lower phone bill each month for you! But we wouldn’t be Republic if we just stopped there. We’re always looking for ways to make your smartphone experience the best it can be. That’s where cell to WiFi handover comes in…
Currently, whenever you’re connected to WiFi, you can use it to make a call. Whenever you leave WiFi range, your phone seamlessly hops over to cell so you can continue your conversation without skipping a beat. But, what about when you come back to WiFi? Like during that commute home from work, when you walk back in your front door…It’d be nice if your phone could jump right back onto WiFi for an even better connection while you talk. That’s exactly what we’ll be tackling in Republic Labs: Project Salsa and we need your help!
This project is super easy too. Once enrolled and activated, all you’ll have to do is make calls (preferably on or near WiFi). And report your feedback. We’ll be periodically asking you to record your overall experiences on surveys. We’ll also have a form open to collect any specific experiences, thoughts, or comments you have. That’s it! That’s all it takes to put all our members on the path to staying better connected!

*Please note that not everyone who signs up for Labs will be invited into every project. Many of our labs have minimum requirements for entry. For Salsa, you must have a Moto X (1st Gen), Moto X (2nd Gen) with Lollipop 5.1, Moto G (1st Gen), Moto E (1st Gen), or Moto E (2nd Gen) with Lollipop 5.1. You also must have the most recent app version for your individual device (click here to update). Because this is a lab about calling, we will be selecting users that make plenty of calls — WiFi, cell, or both — on their phone. Depending on the size of the signup list, we may have to take a random sample of participants from that list.
